Moving to the Dominican Republic from the USA
Ship your household goods with SDC International Shipping when moving to the Dominican Republic from the USA. We will make sure your move is as seamless as possible.
Whether retiring or repatriating to the Dominican Republic, you will need to engage the services of an approved international shipping company to move your personal belongings. SDC International Shipping is licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission to export residential goods from the United States.
Even though it is closer to the rest of the USA than Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic is still a foreign country and requires the expertise of licensed international movers.

International Household Movers
The Dominican Republic is a tropical country, so make sure you take appropriate things. You do not need to send thick blankets or heavy coats, but you should really consider what you will need there.
Have you already purchased or rented a home in the D. R.? We hope you have decided what you will take with you and what will remain in the USA. Once you know, we’ll do our best to deliver your articles with as little damage as possible.
Our international household movers will carefully wrap and pack your items in moving boxes. The packing service is necessary for anyone who wants to purchase international moving insurance against damage to your shipment.
International Car Shipping to the D.R.
We can arrange to ship your car to the Dominican Republic. Duty-free import is possible If you have purchased your auto two years ago and owned it for at least twelve months. Luxury cars and motor vehicles with more than six cylinders or more than 2,000cc are not allowed.
If you don’t qualify for the tax exemption, you can still import a car, but you will be charged 20% of the car’s value (including shipping and insurance costs). Don’t forget to insure your car as damage might occur during ocean transit.
Also, keep in mind that shipping insurance is different from regular insurance. You should insure your car for the amount that car would cost to buy right now in the D.R.
You can also send other vehicles. For example, when shipping motorcycles, they should be crated within a shipping container. You must have a motorcycle license if sending one.
The Dominican Republic has a modern road infrastructure, and there is no need for specialty cars unless you prefer them.
Assistance with Customs Paperwork
If you want, SDC International Shipping can manage all your customs processes. We know how important customs clearance is to the timeline of your shipment.
Our customs agents will get everything right. They’ll make precise calculations, submit legal documents, and include all crucial information to ensure smooth export and import. As a result, your household goods will move through customs quickly and efficiently.
International Shipping Options
Our sea shipments to the Dominican Republic enter via the Caucedo Port, close to Santo Domingo. The port has a modern container and customs clearance facilities. Those with final delivery destinations on the north shore will also come through this port and be delivered by truck to your home.
We offer containerized shipments. While not everyone sends Full Container Loads (FCL) to the Dominican Republic, most of our clients choose this international shipping option. Less than Full Container Loads (LFC) are available, but it will be a bad choice for most clients.
The D. R. is one of the locations for which it makes much more sense to send a full container load, as the overall cost of a partial shipment approaches that of a 20’ container quite quickly.
If you are sending a vehicle in your shipment, you will want to send it with household goods in a 40’ container. Boats that don’t fit in a container are sent using a different method called Roll On Roll Off.

How Much Does It Cost to Move to D.C.?
The moving cost to the Dominican Republic hinges on several factors. These are the amount of belongings being moved, the distance of the move, and how many extra services are needed. For example, moving a 4-bedroom apartment will cost more than a single studio.
Our logistics experts will work with you closely to assess all the factors related to your shipment and create a custom quote for your move.
How Long Does It Take to Move to the Dominican Republic?
Most household removals are done by sea because it’s the cheapest shipping method. Ocean freight typically takes between 6-8 weeks.
International removal by air will get your stuff twice faster, but it’s the most expensive type of shipment. Air freight takes 5 to 7 days but will depend on the flight availability and your final destination in the D.R.
Popular Moving Destinations in the D.R.
Most people moving to the Dominican Republic from the USA can be divided into two groups. Nearly half of them are citizens of the Dominican Republic who have been in the USA for a few years and are now moving back to be reunited with their families.
Most of the remainder are retiring to the county because the Dominican Republic has an affordable cost of living and offers an easy path to permanent residence. Being very close to the United States makes it very easy to visit family or have them come to the D. R. to visit you.
For several years, most people who have lived in the United States can afford comfortable houses in the Dominican Republic. We have clients who have moved to destinations throughout the country, and delivery is available everywhere.
