Located near the slopes of the gorgeous alps with many stylish and picturesque towns, Austria has become one of the most desired destinations for expats worldwide.

Moving Electronics and Appliances to Austria
Is it worth shipping electronics and appliances to Austria from the USA? The answer is that many home appliances won’t fit the Austrian wattage even if you try to use a transformer. So we recommend leaving behind American air conditioners, microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, and even TV sets. Avoid including in your shipment anything that consumes a lot of power. Electronics, such as laptops and computers, are OK to take.
Purchasing multi-system appliances and electronics might be a solution if you intend to move often to Europe. If you have fancy ceiling lamp fixtures or chandeliers that don’t comply with the Austrian voltage standard, consider rewiring and adapting them.
Customs Info for Moving to Austria from the USA
Household goods coming from the US must be owned and used for at least six months and intended only for personal use. Non-EU shipments are not exempt from taxes, including duty. To import your belongings, you will have to present the following documents:
- Your ID documents (e.g., passport);
- Customs declaration;
- Proof of ownership of your items;
- Proof that you lived in the US for more than 12 months;
- Three copies of the inventory list.
One particular requirement for final clearance is proof of registration in the municipality you will be residing. So at the time of importing your goods, you need to present your new residence permit and registration card.

How Long Does it Take to Ship to Austria?
There’s no direct sea route to Austria, so your goods will likely be shipped to Austria through Italy, Belgium, or Germany.
We operate shipping via sea freight and ocean freight in containers. If we send your items from the US east coast in a separate container or FCL (Full Container Load), it will take 6 to 8 weeks. Sending the FCL container from the west coast takes 8-12 weeks.
Sea freight in a shared or consolidated container from the east coast can take 12 weeks, while consolidated transit from the east coast is the longest; it may take 14 weeks.
