People worldwide consider themselves digital nomads, but currently, 69% are men, and 31% are women. Research has also shown that 58% are 38 years of age or older.
Travel Habits
Not all digital nomads travel alike. The majority, 54% to be exact, consider themselves full-time travelers, and 46% are part-time travelers.
Employment
There’s no right or wrong way to work as a digital nomad, but having the flexibility to work remotely is a huge help. 56% of digital nomads say they have a job that allows them to telecommute, at least some of the time.
Living Arrangements
Are you trying to figure out where you’ll live as a digital nomad? There are plenty of options. According to MBO’s survey, 51% live in hotels, and 16% live in hostels. Some wanderers enjoy living the van life, and about 17% of nomads in the U.S. do so.
Relationship Status
You might think you have to be single to live the lifestyle, but there are plenty of digital nomads who are coupled up. The same MBO Partner survey showed that 31% are married and travel full-time with their partner.
Productivity
If you think working remotely while you travel the world will slow you down, think again. According to a Standford University survey, digital nomads are 13% more productive than their peers who work in the office.
Saving and Spending
You might be surprised to learn that digital nomads are statistically a lot better at saving than their counterparts. According to a breakdown by Dough Roller, remote workers can save at least $7,000 annually. That’s because they’re spending a lot less on transportation, clothes, and food.
Becoming a Digital Nomad
As you can see from the stats above, a digital nomad’s life is flexible and depends on the individual. There is no right or wrong way to do it, and believe it or not, becoming one is easier than you think.
By taking the right actions, you can easily make your wanderlust dreams come true. But you probably have a lot of questions. How do I get around? How much does the lifestyle cost?

Plan Ahead
The number one thing that every aspiring digital nomad should do is to prepare. While this might go against your nomadic instinct, planning is required. You’ll need to make sure you have a reliable way of earning income, and you’ll need to decide on what kind of places you’ll stay in.
There are hostels, hotels, vans, and some people even couch surf. Besides where you’ll stay, you have to think of how you’ll get around. No matter how you decide to live as a digital nomad, you simply need to plan.
Start Saving
One of the most important parts of successfully living as a digital nomad is having your finances in order and having plenty of savings! You’ll need to have a steady stream of income and savings at your disposal so you can pay for travel expenses, living expenses, and anything that might come up along the way.
Figure Out Your Employment
Before you make your move, you need to have secure work that you can do from any location as long as there’s WiFi available. As remote work continues to rise, this will be easier to do, but it’s still good to have this figured out before you start.
Talk to Other Digital Nomads
The easiest way to feel confident and secure in your life as a digital nomad is to talk to other digital nomads. There are several online communities where you can ask questions, learn, and even find new friends to meet up with as you travel!
Take it Slow
Any experienced digital nomad will tell you that you should take things slow. Not just when it comes to preparing, but also when travel. Whenever you arrive at a new destination, don’t get in a rush to move on to the next place or pack in too many activities too soon. Keep in mind that you’ll still have the same responsibilities that you would if you lived in one place permanently.
