5 Tips to Making Friends Abroad

Making friends abroad can seem like a difficult task, especially when you are new to the country. Even if you are outgoing, being in a completely different country can make you as shy as ever. However, there are some steps you can take to getting to know people who have a different background than you when moving abroad.

1. Use a Hostel

Hostels may seem a bit out of the ordinary and don’t come with all the amenities of hotels but they do offer an outlet to make friends. Many individuals in hostels are also travelers seeking friendship, so it is much easier to build connections here. You can schedule mealtimes to meet with others or chat with roommates about your experience. The more you talk, the more connections you will make.

2. Join a Facebook Group

By joining various Facebook groups you can find others with common interests and reach out to them. Along with this, post something on the group’s wall promoting yourself. Ask questions and bring up interesting topics to spark up a conversation.

3. Take a Language Class

If you have moved to a country where you aren’t familiar with the language, taking a language class will allow you to meet others in the same boat as you. Since other students come from different locations across the globe, you can also learn about different cultures. The classroom is generally in a smaller setting so you can become more personal with the other students and build solid relationships.

4. Through Other Friends

Prior to moving, let your close friends know where you are moving and see if they may have any connections. Meeting a friend of a friend is always a smart option because you already feel like you know that person. Perhaps send out a mass email to your friends, Tweet or FB post asking your friends if they may know anyone in the country you are traveling to.

5. Join a Sport or Hobby

Sports and activities involve team bonding exercises so it’s almost guaranteed you will make friends this way. You can find a list of activities again through Social Media. Meetup  is also an excellent way to making friends who want to get involved in the same activity as you.

The idea of meeting new people in another country can seem terrifying but it is not the complete nightmare you might think. There are many ways to find new company and build relationships with others. You don’t necessarily need to have everything in common to become friends. In fact, if you meet people who are completely different than you can learn so much more.
