How Long Does It Take to Ship Household Goods From the USA to Japan?

Of the major destinations SDC ships to, Japan sits at the far end of the map. The coast you ship from changes the schedule more than almost anywhere else, and the customs paperwork adds a sequence of its own that has to line up with your arrival.

SDC, an FMC-licensed door-to-door moving company, plans Japan moves from the day you enter the country, because Japanese customs starts its paperwork with you, not with the ship.

Timeline by US Origin Region

Ocean freight to Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe is the longest route in this series. SDC’s planning ranges for Asia, door to door:

  • West Coast (Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle): roughly 7 to 13 weeks.
  • East Coast and Gulf Coast: roughly 6 to 12 weeks.
  • Interior origins add the trip to the departure port.

These are planning ranges, not guarantees. A shared container is slower: SDC plans 8 to 16 weeks for one, because it has to be filled before it sails and sorted after it lands.

Why Routing Changes the Range

Sailings do not all take the same road. Some East Coast and Gulf containers cross through the Panama Canal, and others move through an Asian hub port such as Busan or Singapore before the final leg to Japan. The routings can differ by a week or more, and the booking rarely shows which one you have. Ask your coordinator before you commit to a landing date.

Which Japanese Port

The port follows your address. Tokyo and Yokohama serve the Kanto region, Osaka and Kobe serve Kansai, and Nagoya serves the Chubu region between them. Choosing the port closest to your new home trims the final delivery leg, and settle it before the booking, not after.

Where the Rest of the Time Goes

Sea time is only part of the total. Packing and collection take a day or two, and the container then waits for its sailing. At the Japanese end, plan for several days to clear, longer if the container is selected for inspection. Plants and animals subject to quarantine are inspected separately at the nearest quarantine station, so a shipment with a houseplant in it can wait on a different office than the rest of your goods.

The Customs Sequence That Sets Your Shipping Date

Japan allows household effects to enter duty-free for people who have lived abroad for more than a year or will stay in Japan for more than a year. The goods have to be imported within six months of your entry into Japan. The six months run from the day you land, not from the day the container sails.

The paperwork follows an unusual order:

  • You file two copies of the Declaration of Accompanied Articles and Unaccompanied Articles with customs when you enter Japan.
  • Customs stamps one copy with a certification seal and hands it back to you.
  • When the container arrives, that sealed copy goes back to customs with your passport and the transport documents.

Japan Customs says it cannot redo the first step for any reason, including a lost original. Photograph the stamped copy the day you receive it, and put the original somewhere you will not misplace it.

What the Six-Month Window Does and Does Not Do

Six months is generous against a sailing schedule measured in weeks, so the window itself rarely causes trouble. The sequence does. The stamped declaration does not exist until you land, which means a container that reaches port before you has to wait for you. Build the sailing around your arrival date, with the container arriving after you, not before.

At the Japanese end, clearance needs more than the sealed declaration. The carrier sends an arrival notice, you collect the transport documents (the delivery order) from the carrier, and customs then wants those plus a statement of contents, your passport and receipts. Goods leave the customs warehouse for an inspection area, and you take possession only after clearance is complete. Keep the statement of contents consistent with your packing inventory so the two documents tell the same story.

The procedure can be delegated to a professional customs agent. If you do, the agent needs the sealed declaration after your entry and before clearance begins.

Working Backward From Your Entry Date

Say you enter Japan on 1 April and want your belongings delivered around 1 May. Shipping from the West Coast, counting back 7 to 13 weeks puts container pickup between about 30 January and 13 March. From the East Coast, counting back 6 to 12 weeks puts pickup between about 6 February and 20 March. Either way, the container should arrive after you do, which is the point of working backward from your entry date.

Cars and Other Special Cases

A car follows its own paperwork. Japan Customs asks for three copies of the duty exemption application, proof that you used the car, and proof of your entry. The exemption is conditional on not selling or transferring the vehicle within two years of the import permission date. SDC ships a vehicle only when it is containerized with a household goods shipment, never on its own.

Questions People Ask

Can the container arrive before I do?

It can arrive, but it cannot clear until you have entered Japan and hold the stamped declaration. The wider customs picture is in our guide to customs for a move from Los Angeles to Japan.

What if I lose the stamped copy?

Japan Customs states it cannot redo that step. Treat the sealed original like a passport.

Do I need a customs agent?

Not by rule. Customs says the procedure can be delegated to a professional agent, and most movers handle it for the client.

Does a shared container take longer?

Yes. SDC plans 8 to 16 weeks door to door for a shared container, because it has to be filled before it sails and sorted after it lands.

Tell a coordinator which coast you ship from and the day you expect to land in Japan, and the pickup week follows from those two dates. Start with a quote request, or read the wider moving to Japan guide first.
