Getting Over the Fear of Flying
Being afraid of flying shouldn’t be an embarrassment. In fact, this is a popular fear that many people have, even those that have jobs which require constant travel. Getting over the fear of flying takes time, and that may be a luxury you do not have if you fly a lot. Luckily there are an abundance of solutions to cure your fear of flying when moving overseas.
Sit in Front
If possible, book a ticket that enables you to sit in the front section of the plane where there is less turbulence. Let the flight attendant know that you have a fear of flying, that way you have someone to reach out to and he/she can keep an eye on you.
Avoid Caffeinated Beverages
It is best not to drink anything that has caffeine in it prior to or during your trip. Drinks like coffee, energy drinks or soda will certainly increase your anxiety. Since caffeine is a stimulant, it will produce a “flight or fight” reaction on your body. These reactions are your body’s natural way of protecting yourself. Caffeine will cause restlessness, twitching, nausea, mood swings, a rapid heartbeat…pretty much everything you DON’T want when flying. Wine is a great alternative that can make you feel relaxed but make sure not to overdo it.
Unique Rubber Band Trick
Most women wear an elastic around their wrist to tie up their hair. Take a closer look and you might find a couple men’s wrists wrapped in rubber bands. This is a popular technique that isn’t often talked about. Put an elastic band around your wrist and whenever you feel agitated or anxious, snap the band. When doing this, you will feel a sharp amount of pain which is ultimately to train yourself to think more positively.
Don’t Forget to Breathe
Attempt to get over your fear of flying with some breathing exercises. The key is to exhale which many people tend to forget when suffering from a panic attack. Try to practice over-breathing to relieve a racing heart and dizziness.
Whether you are afraid of flying due to a previous experience or this is just your body’s natural way of reacting to an airplane flight, there are many ways to overcome this fear. Along with the advice above, try to avoid listening or watching any horror stories about flights that went awry. Listening to music or watching a movie is extremely calming during a flight and is a great distraction. Most importantly, be aware that you are not alone with your fear of flying. More likely than not, there are a handful of people on the same flight as you who share similar flying anxieties.
