The third most populous city in Switzerland with 800 thousand people in its entire metro area, Basel is a multicultural city located where the borders of France, Switzerland, and Germany meet.  The oldest university in the country, founded in 1460, including the Museum of Fine Arts, contains the oldest art collection accessible to the public.  It is a major industrial center for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries as well.

The town is home to several historic buildings and museums, and the surrounding area is perfect for hiking and mountain biking.
