6 Items Not Allowed on a Plane

In the wake of increased airline security measures to help prevent terrorism, numerous rules have been made regarding what is and isn’t allowed on international air transport. While this is important for passenger safety, it can be inconvenient if you’re moving. You’ll need to go through your belongings to identify any restricted or questionable items and have them transported by a professional mover.

Knives and Other Sharp Items

If it can cut or stab easily, it’s not allowed during international travel. Kitchen knives, pocket knives, pointed scissors over four inches, awls, ice picks, box cutters and craft knives are banned anywhere on the plane. If security personnel discover any of these things in your luggage, they will be confiscated. When you’re packing, be sure that those belongings destined for air travel are free of anything that might fall under this category.

Explosives or Combustibles

Any substance that is explosive or combustible is strictly prohibited on international air transport. This category includes things like gunpowder, gasoline, kerosene, paint thinners, rubbing alcohol, perfumes, solvents, paints and varnishes. For stress-free moving, it’s strongly recommended to have these items handled by a professional mover.

Liquids

liquidsCertain liquids are allowed on planes when traveling overseas, but only in quantities of three ounces or less. Fluids on the “allowed” list include water, juice, coffee, tea, yogurt, toiletries and other consumables. Large packages of liquids must be placed in a checked bag or shipped ahead when traveling overseas. Of course, some liquids won’t be allowed on the flight at all, such as cleaners, fertilizers, gel candles or oils.

Corrosive Substances

No corrosive substances can be permitted on a plane, even if they’re in your checked luggage. Bleach, batteries, drain cleaners and industrial de-greasing agents fall under this classification. Battery-operated wheelchairs may also be prohibited because their batteries are considered a “spillable” type.

Unidentified Powders

If you use nutritional supplements, you’ll need to take special precautions to avoid problems. Airline security frowns upon unidentified powders, especially during international travel. At the very least, you’ll be pulled aside and your bags will be thoroughly inspected by hand. In the worst case scenario, you could be taken for questioning and your supplements could be confiscated for testing. When bringing powdered supplements on international air transport, it’s recommended to keep them in their original packaging or label them for identification purposes. You should also do your research before hand. A supplement that is legal in one country may carry penalties in another.

Medications

Redcross

Medications are a special concern for many people traveling overseas. However, if you rely on medications, you’ll be happy to know that you shouldn’t have a problem. All medications are allowed on board flights as long as they meet the criteria. Liquid medications, such as insulin, must be eight ounces or less. Non-prescriptions must be under four ounces. When applicable, you should also be able to prove that you have a prescription for your medications, so keep any pharmacy labels with them.
